Podcast Show Notes
I know that when you look and feel good, you have the confidence to show up every day in your business. Your face and what you wear are essential to how your brand is represented. Inside this article, I share what to wear and what not to wear on camera and video to elevate your brand immediately.
You have a full schedule
As an entrepreneur, you are waking up to a full content creation schedule, client check-ins, product development, personal development training, and social media updates.
Most of these tasks have in common is YOU seen on camera or video – Whether that be a real camera, your computer screen, or your phone. Your face and what you wear are essential to how your brand is represented.
Whether you are hopping on zoom for a client discovery call or you are snapping a selfie to share your workspace for the day. Your image and appearance give off an impression of you and your brand every time you start the day.
What impression does your shirt give?
Have you ever really thought of that? The shirt you tossed on today gave off an impression to your audience about who you are.
It’s true.
I know that when I look good, I feel good and can be more energized and productive, but it wasn’t until recently that I started researching what I should be wearing on camera.
I always knew I wanted my brand to be relatable to my ideal client consuming my content. But what I wasn’t thinking about is how the shirt I was wearing would ultimately define my brand’s initial impression.
Audit your wardrobe
I look back at videos I recorded a few years ago and just cringed at the thought of large floral patterns and striped tank tops in some of my videos.
I honestly never gave what I wore much thought until I understood the importance of my appearance. Especially since my content these days is all evergreen. This visibility means my content lives on the web for years. It’s displayed and replayed on my blog, youtube channel, and inside my courses.
So it’s not only imperative that your 24 hour Instagram stories, Reels, and Profile Feed images of yourself appear friendly and approachable, but the same goes for your in-person meetings, live zoom calls, and course videos.
What To Wear To Immediately Elevate Your Brand
Today, I want to share what I’ve learned over the past year about what to wear and what not to wear on camera and video.
Here they are – The 4 points to keep in mind on “What To Wear To Immediately Elevate Your Brand” on video or camera.
1 – Camera-Friendly Colors
I know that all too often, our closets are full of black and white staples, but when it comes to the camera – those are actually the two worst colors to wear. Wearing white dominates the screen, and black can make your dark circles more pronounced and give you a more tired look. The best colors to wear are rich jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green, ruby red, amethyst purple, turquoise, topaz yellow. These colors pop on camera and look fabulous on everyone.
2 – Textures and Patterns
This is pretty simple. Don’t wear either when on camera or video, and here’s why. Large plaids, bold stripes, large floral patterns, and tight, repetitive patterns are very distracting. They take the focus off of you and your excellent message and onto your clothes and what you are wearing. When it comes to fabric, choose something that isn’t shiny, like satin, or dull like suede. A simple polyester or rayon knit that doesn’t wrinkle easily is your best choice.
3 – Clothing Shape
So we’ve all heard the horror stories of buttons getting accidentally unbuttoned and bra straps hanging out of group zoom meetings. How embarrassing, right!? So when it comes to your clothing shape, keep it simple. This means clean lines, no fussy collars, scarves, or turtlenecks. You want to show your neckline but not your cleavage. So find a happy medium.
4 – Clothing Fit
It’s no secret that the camera adds ten pounds. It’s why you lift your camera high and tilt it down when taking those selfies. So for clothing fit, stay away from boxy and baggy. Choose tops that are going to contour your body, but still be comfortable and a bit relaxed. Oh, and no tank tops. The second you show off an arm – the focus again goes from your message to your body parts. So make sure you have at minimum a cap sleeve to every top you wear. And if not, simply toss on a cardigan.

How to show up with confidence
I understand running a business from home includes more challenging obstacles than what you will wear today. But I also know when you look and feel good, you have the confidence to show up every day in your business for photos, video calls, short-form videos, live videos, and in-person meetings!
For me, confidence = productivity. And productivity = more success and impact.
The more I feel confident, the more apt I am to record an extra reel, show up live on Instagram, and snap a few more selfies.
So why shouldn’t I want to feel that way every day?? My business deserves for me to show up every day to promote it.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve been so tired of not having anything in my closet to wear on camera. Today I am committed to helping both of us with this problem!
