As you know, Instagram is an excellent way to express your creativity and showcase your work in any field. But there are some things you should keep in mind when taking this approach to branding yourself, like choosing the right username, writing a bio that reflects your personality, or posting content that’s relevant for today’s social media audience! Most people don’t realize how important it is to have an Instagram account until they start using it. They don’t know how to use Instagram for Business. And then they’re left wondering what to do next. Inside this article, I’ve compiled five quick tips for building the perfect personal brand on Instagram so you can get started with confidence.
How to use Instagram for Business
After working with hundreds of personal brands I understand it’s not always easy to know how to get started with Instagram for your business. After all, there are some things you should keep in mind before ever posting anything on the social media platform.
But luckily for you, I’ve compiled 5 quick tips for building a perfect personal brand on Instagram so that you have the confidence and knowledge necessary to start your account off right! These tips will work for anyone brand at any stage so you’ll know how to use Instagram for Business. They are great reminders to understand the basics of Instagram that many overlook.
5 quick tips to build your brand on Instagram
So without further ado, here are 5 quick tips to build your brand on Instagram:
1. Choose a username that reflects who you are as a person.
Choose a username that reflects who you are as a person and what type of content you post. This will make it easier for your current and potential followers to find you as it is a searchable part of Instagram. So it’s very, very important that you think about how you want to attract your ideal follower because you want to use keywords in these sections that they’re already searching for. So by doing this trick, your profile’s going to come up higher and the Instagram search results.
This is where having done extensive SEO Keyword research will help. But your username is not something you want to change after you set it up – so if it’s best to use your full name I suggest doing that here.

2. Update Your Bio To Reflect Your Brand Goals.
When writing a bio or uploading your profile photo, ask yourself if it reflects your personality or brand. If it doesn’t, then you might want to consider a change.
The bio, along with your username, profile picture, and link will be the first things people see when they visit your page and they are the ones that will make or break your profile.
Your profile picture is the prominent thing that will draw attention when someone visits your profile page. And it should give a lasting impression, thus your job is to make it memorable and familiar.
One of the bio components that is usually misused by people is the NAME field. Not the username, which we already talked about, but the actual name. This searchable field can have up to 30 characters and since Instagram doesn’t require it to be your actual name you are free to be smart about what you write there. Use your business name or make sure you include 1-2 targeted CORE keywords that best describe your business.
Then lastly, your bio description should include what you do and how it helps your ideal client. Your bio link is the only clickable link on your entire Instagram profile… so your profile link is of the utmost importance as that will drive most of the traffic to where you need it to go. Plus it’s a way to get your audience onto a page and platform that you own. So refer to top-of-funnel marketing for a way to lead a prospect into your sales process here.
3. Determine Your Content Pillars.
When it comes to the content you’ll post about it’s important to choose a set of content pillars you’ll rotate through. As I teach inside my Instagram Unlock Workshop, think about your IDEAL CLIENT and base all of your posts around him or her. If you’re just starting out, then ask yourself: “What would my client want/need to see on my Instagram?”.
Above all, be sure to post original content and avoid plagiarism and stolen images at all costs. After all, it’s what you’ve built up your personal brand for in the first place. So make sure that each photo and video is something you’re proud of and represents who you are as the owner of the account!
You really need to think about what kind of story and message you want your Instagram page to convey and why are people following your page. Instagram is essentially a way to tell a story through photos and videos.
Depending on your target audience and strategy, your theme can either have only photos, images with text like memes or quotes, you can have videos, or you can even mix it up. Your theme can be incredibly powerful.
When you use a consistent brand palette and set of design elements, your brand will become memorable to your audience and instantly separate you from competitors.
4. Increase Exposure with Hashtags and Reels.
5. Understand your client’s emotional journey.
Last but not least, keep in mind the emotional journey a potential client takes with your brand. Building a strong community on Instagram doesn’t happen overnight, so it’s important to continuously reflect on the Know, Like, and Trust principles.
Most potential clients don’t see your post then purchase your product or service right away. There is an emotional journey that potential clients take from the time they get introduced to your brand to when they decide to purchase from you.
- At first, they must KNOW and connect with your brand,
- next, they need to LIKE what they see from your brand as you shift their perspectives with your beliefs,
- then lastly their TRUST with you increases as you share your unique solution to their problem.
That’s why it’s imperative to hit them with the right content at the right time for their stage.

I understand how frustrating that can be because I’ve been there too! So much so I took a total hiatus from posting for an entire month this fall. So like most things, instead of giving up on the platform for business, I did some research and education on what signals triggered the IG algorithm I thought I was disliking so much.
What I found was a breath of fresh air.

- No ❌ I didn’t need to spend hours a week creating reels
